Fly Control for Your Cattle stables
Biological fly control such as predatory flies and mini wasps can be used in both conventional and organic cattle stables. They are effecient, natural enemies of both the common house fly and the biting fly.
Annoying flies can affect the milk production
Flies can stress cows out and this leads to a reduction in the production of milk. DLG (Danish Agricultural Grocery Company) explains here Fluer forårsager tabt produktion that on average 139 kg of milk per milk cow is lost each year. For calves until weaning the average loss in gain is 1.16kg and the loss in gain from weaning til slaughter is 1.68kg all because of stress caused by flies. (DLG, 2021)
Mini wasps are suitable for cattle stables
The flooring in a cattle stable is typically deep litter bedding, this means that mini wasps are usually the most optimal choice for controlling unwanted flies in cattle stables and/or calf boxes. The mini wasps thrive in the dry environment in the bedding, and they work by looking for fly pupae in which they lay their eggs.
Does your cattle stable have slurry channels or slalom systems?
Predatory flies thrive in damp or fully wet areas. For stables with slalom mixers or slurry channels you can complement the fly control of mini wasps with predatory flies.
