Predatory flies

High quality, fair prices, good costumer service – Effective and Environmentally friendly fly control using predatory flies and mini wasps

Predatory Flies (also known as black dump flies, black garbage flies, and dump flies) are natural enemies of the common houseflies (Musca domestica) and biting flies (Stomoxys calcitrans) both of whom are often found in pig and cattle stables. The latin name for the predatory fly is Hydrotaea Aenescens.

Predatory flies control the population of unwatend flies in pig and cattle stables

Predatory flies can be used for controlling the population of other flies in the stables because their larvae are predatory and live of the larvae of other types of flies. Miljøfluen® has specialised in breeding predatory flies in so large amounts that farmers can benefit from the natural abilities of the insects and thereby get an effective but also environmental weapon against the unwanted flies in the stables. A control solution with predatory flies from us is a subscription with no lock-in period.

A small and calm predatory fly

Predatory flies can be found in the wilds across Denmark and the rest of Europe, but they have a different temperament than the common house flies. They don’t swarm, are more calm, and naturally seek dark and damp places in stables. they don’t bite animals unlike the biting fly and thus bother neither animals nor humans in the stables.

By using biological control methods you avoid the unwanted insects building resistance

As opposed to if you make use of chemicals (biocides) for controling unwanted flies in farming areas the unwanted insects can never build resistance towards predatory flies or mini wasps. When using chemicals this is always a risk, and you may have to change brand after a while if the chemicals before less effecient. This will never happen if you use predatory flies or mini wasps.

Miljøfluen® is helpful in making a plan for what the best solution for your stables will be – this is of course free of charge.

Predatory flies are particularly good for stables with slurry channels

The natural behaviour of predatory flies is particularly efficient for controlling unwanted flies in stables with for example slurry channelse, as it seeks damp areas for mating and feeding. When its larvae are brough into this world they start eating the larvae of the common house flies and biting flies both of whom also live in the slurry channels. By doing this the larvae of the predatory flies will erradicate the unwanted larvae before they develop into adult flies.

However, if you have deep litter bedding in your stables we instead recommend that you use mini wasps.

* The calculation for how often the beneficial insects should be added to your stables and how many bags of predatory flies or boxes of mini wasps depends on your unique stable and is agreed upon with us here at Miljøfluen®.

The predatory flies are mailed directly to the stables

Predatory flies from Miljøfluen® are send directly to the stables in perforated bags, they are send at regular intervals using mail services. Thus a control solution using predatory flies is a subscription with no lock-in.

How predatory flies work for you

  • Step 1. Receive the bag of predatory fly eggs, larvae and pupae. Open the bag enough that the predatory flies can get out once they hatch and place the bag in the environmental bucket you have received.

  • Step 2. When the predatory flies hatch in the bag they will naturally fly into the slurry channels in the stables, here they will start laying eggs.

  • Step 3: From the newly laid egg larvae will hatch and this is who does the actual handling of the unwanted flies in the stable. The larvae of the predatory flies will eat the larvae of the unwanted flies thus making sure they never develop into common house flies or biting flies.

  • Step 4: You simply leave the predatory flies to do their thing and add new bags of flies, eggs, larvae and pupae at regular intervals – you can read more about how often at our section on subscription with no lock-in.
